Lecturers demonstrate new ways to approach behaviour management

Release Date:
08/06/09

Trainee teachers, policy-makers, educational professionals and school-based mentors will benefit from a new book about behaviour management.

Simon Ellis, Senior Lecturer in the Centre for Enabling Learning at Canterbury Christ Church University, and Professor Janet Tod, former Head of Educational Research at the University, have published a new book ‘
Behaviour for Learning: Proactive Approaches to Behaviour Management’.

The book stemmed from a research project commissioned by the Training and Development Agency which was carried out by a team based at the University. Since the publication of this research in 2004, Simon Ellis and Professor Tod, co-author of the original research report with Dr Sacha Powell, have evolved the Behaviour for Learning approach.

This distinctive approach has been pioneered within the University’s Faculty of Education and has been tried and tested by tutors, trainees and practicing teachers. Its research origins enable the book to combine the practical guidance favoured by many practitioners with the theory and critical reflection required by tutors and other academics.

Simon Ellis said: “This book presents a unique focus on the relationships that underpin learning, placing an emphasis on the development of learning behaviours. It endorses the view that the core purpose of behaviour management is to improve pupil learning.”

Professor Tod said: “We offer a conceptual framework that allows trainees and teachers to decide what strategy is best for individuals in their classroom. It recognises the cognitive, social and emotional factors that influence pupil behaviour in schools.”
