Manor House School

Special needs catered for

Manor House School is a DfE registered independent school which caters for boys and girls ages 7 to 18 years with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) difficulties.

Typically students will present with behaviour that challenges, some will have associated learning difficulties and almost all children will have encountered negative educational experiences or disruption, and consequently lack confidence in their own abilities.

A stable and caring environment combined with high staff to student ratios, ensures that every student at Hillcrest Manor House School has the opportunity to develop their abilities, share new experiences and be supported in realising their future dreams.

Manor House School believes ‘education’ should be a positive and enjoyable experience where students are proud of their achievements and strive to do well.

It is a Department for Education registered Independent specialist school that also facilitates the education of students from the two on-site residential houses.

Specialist facilities

The facilities at Manor House School include subject specific learning spaces for Art, D&T and vocational qualifications.

There is a strong emphasis on developing life skills and working towards future individual aspirations. The school also offers Forest School to build self-esteem and team building amongst its students

Support services provided

The level of support and intervention a child receives is based upon their level of need. The school manages individual learning and development support programmes linking closely with the Clinical team. Through a robust monitoring system we are quickly aware of any changes in students or any new areas of need that will need to be supported.

Work is carefully differentiated in order to meet the individual needs of students and regular assessment ensures continuity and progression. Each student has individually tailored positive expectations for achievement. This ensures they are challenged appropriately and experience success frequently.

Individual behaviour targets are discussed with the students on a daily basis and are monitored, reviewed and revised regularly.

The school has a team approach. Teachers, Instructors, Teaching Assistants, Carers, Social Workers and other professionals are all involved in monitoring student progress using individual education and behaviour plans.

Manor House School provides every student with a broad, balanced, differentiated and relevant curriculum based on the National Curriculum guidelines. A comprehensive 14-16 curriculum Pathway is developed for those students it is appropriate for. This may include GCSE, BTEC, Functional Skills Entry Level, Level 1 and Level 2.

The whole curriculum looks to accreditation through the AQA Unit Awards Scheme alongside more external awarding bodies.

The Curriculum is differentiated to ensure individual needs are met. We aim to introduce students to a wide range of knowledge, skills and experience.

It also emphasises the need to acquire basic skills in Literacy and Numeracy, therefore our schemes of work are carefully planned to
ensure full coverage at a level appropriate to the student’s ability.

Aims and philosophy

Manor House School aims to create a centre of excellence for the education, care and personal development of young people we support.

Our students may have experienced failure in education and trauma in their personal lives, often resulting in low self-esteem. Our challenge is to support these young people to achieve their academic and personal potential and hence to help equip them with the skills they need to enjoy a full, well integrated and satisfying life.

All our students learn to experience success and develop strategies to deal with disappointments. We aim to support our students to develop self-confidence and self-esteem.
