Specialist facilities

The Wenlock School is set in a spacious, purpose built site with designated spaces for the Lower and Upper School. Within the grounds we have indoor and outdoor sports areas, purpose built vocational training facilities, sensory and therapeutic spaces, a suite of specialised learning areas and spacious classrooms. Throughout the school, there are also a number of central community spaces designed to support our pupils and foster social time with others.

All pupils at The Wenlock School will have access to an education that is personalised, engaging and will encompass a purposeful and balanced curriculum. We believe the word ‘curriculum’ should be interpreted in its widest meaning. It is every planned learning experience the pupils have as a member of the school, both learnt formally within a lesson and informally outside the classroom throughout the whole School day. It is all the planned activities that we organise in order to promote learning, personal growth and development. Teachers, Instructors and support staff structure these experiences to ensure that they have the most positive effect on the attainment, progress and personal development of all pupils.

The overall aim of the curriculum is to enable all the young people at The Wenlock School to become Successful Learners, Confident Individuals and Responsible Citizens.

At the School we offer a flexible, personalised, engaging skills based curriculum providing both choice and challenge focused on developing emotional literacy, core subject knowledge and offering a wide range of accredited outcomes. There is a strong focus on the social and emotional aspects of learning and opportunities will be absorbing, rewarding, effectively differentiated and the teaching styles will be diverse. The curriculum is delivered by qualified, skilled, empathetic and experienced staff operating in a warm, safe, nurturing and state of the art learning environment.

There are key values that have guided our curriculum that includes the school context and the clear intent to deliver a quality education to all. There is a whole school approach to our curriculum offer that, in essence, should be holistic and individualised for pupils’ needs and interests. We establish prior knowledge and skills and build a pathway that ensures talents are nurtured, opportunities are experienced and that learning leads to positive outcomes that are right for each individual.

Support services provided

At The Wenlock School, we recognise the importance of truly understanding each young person as an individual, fostering the development of positive relationships and delivering the most effective structure of support. We have a commitment to high standards and a relentless drive to remove barriers that may have prevented our children from engaging in education in the past. We recognise that success can take place in many forms and looks different for each individual, this will be regularly celebrated and we wish to develop a community with a shared sense of purpose.

Many children come to us with very complex needs, communication difficulties and associated challenging behaviour. We always look beyond the issues and potential barriers to learning and recognise the innate potential within. We invest time with each individual child to recognise and understand their learning needs so that we can put in place the right support package. Our expectations are very high for both behaviour and achievement, because we know that we can help children make much more progress than they would within a mainstream school environment.

We have a large therapeutic and well-being offer which includes pastoral members of staff, a Family Support Worker and an in-house therapy team which consists of Psychotherapy, SALT, OT and an Education Psychologist. Our therapy and well-being team support the integration of new pupils into the school through our admissions process. All new pupils will receive a therapeutic baseline to ensure they receive a level of support and intervention that is right for them. The therapeutic baseline may include sensory profiling, communication profiling and a review of their health and well-being.

Our qualified staff team are experienced with a range of specialisms and we have a designated ASC Coordinator.
