Dawn House School (I CAN)

Special needs catered for

I CAN’s Dawn House School is a specialist speech, language and communication school for children and young people aged 5-19 years. We are committed to the highest quality education, therapy and care for pupils with severe and/or complex speech, language and communication difficulties or Asperger’s Syndrome. At Dawn House School the pupils receive the specialist intensive support that they need. We are able to cater for a number of other difficulties which are commonly associated with communication difficulties, including learning difficulties, behavioural difficulties, problems with attention and memory, motor dyspraxia, sensory difficulties, autistic spectrum diagnosis and emotional problems.

Specialist facilities

Pupils’ individual needs are assessed, and provided for by the school’s systems for curriculum planning and assessment and IEP planning. Speech and language therapists and teachers plan lessons that meet two sets of targets - curriculum learning objectives and specific speech and/or language aims. For pupils who need more specific focused work to develop their speech and language skills, individual or small group sessions are timetabled during the school day.

Support services provided

Our school makes use of Makaton signing system to support children’s learning. Two full time sensory integration trained Occupational Therapists and an OT assistant work within some lessons and with individual pupils on more focused, intensive work where necessary. Wellbeing Leads and Learning Mentors supports pupils’ families and is are a key link between home, and school and transition. Residential Care at Dawn House School aims to ensure the emotional and physical well-being of our boarding pupils through an extended curriculum. The school can provide opportunities for non-residential young people to benefit from extended days and overnight stays. The care staff organise a range of activities out of school hours.

General environment

The school is set in a pleasant site on the edge of Sherwood Forest in Nottinghamshire. It is well equipped with specialist teaching facilities including a science lab, food technology room, technology workshop, ICT suite, sports hall and indoor teaching pool for swimming.

Aims and philosophy

"At Dawn House, we provide a language-enriched environment which places great emphasis on effective collaboration between members of our multidisciplinary team who, working together with parents, ensure each pupil is prepared to take their place in society and go forwards with confidence." Angela Child, Principal.

Ofsted says
