St Joseph

Special needs catered for

St Joseph’s provides day, weekly and termly residential education for young people who have complex and severe learning difficulties and ASD. The organisation has achieved Specialist School status in Communication and Interaction and has expert provision for young people with speech and language and communication difficulties. Initial contact may be made by families to Local Authority and Children’s Services leading to a schools-based assessment period.

Specialist facilities

Young people from 5-14 attend a purpose-built school building which is both well resourced and well equipped. Young people from 14-19 attend a separate suite of modern rooms designed to encourage a more mature working atmosphere. Residential accommodation for 5-19 pupils is all on the main site. Young people and staff stay in self-contained houses with great facilities including a swimming pool, art room, pottery, children’s adventure playground, indoor soft play area, sensory room and extensive grounds with sports field, landscaped features, wooded areas and small wildlife ponds.

Support services provided

We have an in-house Psychiatrist and clinical psychologist, and in addition we have speech and language therapy, occupational therapy, art therapy, dance therapy and individual music therapy.

Home school links

Young people and families are encouraged to maintain regular contact by telephone or letter. Communication between home and school is based on an open door policy in which contact between parents and staff is considered to be vital to maximising the well-being and progress of the child. Reporting to families is conducted through parents’ meetings including IEP, Annual Review, Family days and family focused workshops. We provide support to families and ensure communication between home and school is maintained.

Aims and philosophy

At St Joseph’s we aim to promote a caring community in which each student and member of staff shows regard for the needs and feelings of others. We are a Christian community which maintains the status of a centre of excellence in which standards of care and teaching are of the highest order and are constantly developing.

Staff qualification and selection

The Trustees and Governors of St Joseph’s Specialist Trust recognise that the staff are the organisations most important resource. Staff are qualified and experienced, and many have additional qualifications. Appointments of all staff are subject to formal interview, detailed references and an enhanced DBS check.
