Radlett Lodge School - Part of the NAS Education Group
Special needs catered for
As autism specialists we aim to offer your children with autism the education they need to develop their self-confidence, their academic skills and their life skills.
Specialist facilities
Our school is purpose-built for children with autism. Our primary, secondary and post-16 departments as well as our residential lodge are on one site to contribute to a close-knit school community.
Our youngest children have their own large classroom and outside play area with soft play areas, a play house, sand and water trays, and chalk boards.
We have a playground just for younger children which primary school classrooms open straight out onto. Much of the equipment is not fixed to the ground to improve our pupils’ interaction with one another. We also have bikes, balls, and many other toys. The large playground, accessible to all our students, has a sensory garden with its own tipi, a playhouse and adventure playground.
At Radlett Lodge school we have created spaces to suit each person and each mood.
Our indoor chill-out room with sofas, twinkling ceiling and rugs gives our students a place to relax, and our main hall for PE, gym and climbing the traversing wall or using the trampoline give them a space to be active.
Inside the school, children who might need a little more space in their classroom can work at our individual work stations. In our post-16 unit, students have two large classrooms, with several small outdoor areas and gym equipment. There are leisure areas in each room as well as cooking areas and a small library, and the outdoor horticultural area is maintained by our students who are growing raised beds, a variety of flowers and vegetables.
Support services provided
Flexible boarding/weekly or termly residential places/day places
On-site psychologists, speech and language and occupational therapists.
Training and inclusion work with local schools and outreach services to local children with autism learning in mainstream settings.
Home school links
The school encourages strong links with the home. Parents/carers are actively encouraged to work as partners to best promote the educational and social development of their child. Parents are most welcome to visit the school and speak with their child’s teacher or therapist, and we will keep them up to date with their child’s school life with a daily or weekly diary.
General environment
All our students follow a differentiated National Curriculum, and their learning is extremely flexible so that each child is learning at a pace that suits them. They will be surrounded by expertise in a positive, encouraging environment, be respected as an individual and be prepared for adult life.
Our school council ensures that each and every one of our students is able to have a say about what they enjoy at school and anything they would like to change or make improvements to.
Aims and philosophy
We want every child with autism to receive the education that they deserve, and for them to feel happy and valued at school. Our aim is to support them to achieve and to make a positive contribution to the world.
Every student is encouraged to access the local community as much as they are happy and comfortable with, to the extent that students in our post-16 unit access the community on an almost daily basis. From links with local schools and colleges meaning students may attend mainstream schools for specialist teaching, to playing football against other local specialist schools and even exploring the world of work through our connections with local businesses.
Staff qualification and selection
All our staff are professional, caring and dedicated and are trained to work with young people with autism. They meet regularly to share expertise and discuss the progress and happiness of each of our students.
A comprehensive induction programme including SPELL training (an approach to supporting students with autism), low arousal behaviour management training and annual training updates is given to all staff, who are also encouraged to gain a QCF Diploma level 3 in Health and Social Care.
