St Rose

Special needs catered for

St Rose’s is one of the oldest non-maintained Special Schools in the country and is quite unique in terms of providing continuous education, therapy and care for children aged two to twenty-five years, in both a day and residential setting. There is no comparable facility in the South-West of England. We support students with a wide range of disabilities and complex health needs.

Specialist facilities

St Rose’s has a hydrotherapy pool, sensory room, equipment and resources to support a comprehensive range of after school activities, along with extensive grounds close to the centre of Stroud, which include a sensory garden with specialised play equipment.

Support services provided

On site we have our own highly skilled and experienced specialist teaching staff and therapists. We offer a range of therapies including physio, speech and language, occupational, aquatic, massage and music. Staff work closely together to encourage social and personal development as well as supporting each young person with their learning, achievements and meeting their aspirations.

Home school links

Parents and students at St. Rose’s are involved in planning and reviewing progress in all aspects of need through person centred approaches to transition planning and annual reviews; involvement with the individual plans and care plans; parents evenings; daily liaison through home/school books; scheduling medical and health clinics in the school; regular parental support group meetings; fundraising activities and social events.

General environment

We celebrate success and personal achievement in many ways and our students enjoy social activities as part of their learning. Our beautiful grounds are within walking distance of the centre of Stroud where our links with the community are strong and well established.

Aims and philosophy

St Rose’s in Stroud, Gloucestershire, founded in 1912 by the impassioned vision of the Dominican Sisters, it is one of the first ever schools to offer education to children with disabilities. Christian values form the heart of the school however, we encourage children and young people to make their own choices in life and embrace children of all faiths and none.

Our young people are at the heart of everything we do. The teachers, support staff, care and therapy team are driven by an unfaltering belief that disability should not act as a barrier to living a full and meaningful life.

Staff qualification and selection

St Rose’s is an inspiring and rewarding place to work, with a happy, family atmosphere. We value our staff very highly. Their specialist skills and dedicated approach are vital to the highly individual education and care we offer to enable children and students to achieve their potential.
